Learn To Skate program
The CanSkate program at Whitewood Skating Club is designed to introduce beginners of all ages to the exhilarating world of ice skating. Whether your child is taking their first steps on the ice or you're an adult looking to rediscover the joys of skating, our CanSkate program provides a supportive and fun environment to develop your skating skills.
Program Highlights:
-
Structured Learning: Our CanSkate program follows a carefully structured curriculum developed by Skate Canada, the national governing body for figure skating in Canada. This curriculum ensures that skaters progress at their own pace while mastering fundamental skating skills.
-
Certified Coaches: Our experienced and certified coaches are dedicated to helping every skater build a strong foundation in skating. They provide personalized instruction and encouragement to ensure each skater's success.
-
All-Ages Welcome: CanSkate is open to skaters of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. It's never too early or too late to start learning how to skate.
-
Progressive Skills: Skaters will learn a variety of skills, including forward and backward skating, stopping, turning, and more. As they advance, they'll gain confidence and proficiency on the ice.
-
Fun and Positive Atmosphere: We believe that learning to skate should be a fun and enjoyable experience. Our instructors create a positive and supportive atmosphere that encourages skaters to do their best while having a great time.
Who, What, When, Where and How
Our CanSkate program runs during our fall school in September. This is a great start for anyone who participates in other sports during the winter months to get their skating practice in. Our Winter Season is from October to March ending with our Annual Ice Show. Session are 45 minutes, twice a week and consist of a warm up, lesson time, group activity and cool down.
Each skater will progress through 7 stages: Pre-CanSkate, Stage 1-6 by learning and mastering skills in agility, balance and control. Once a skater has completed the program they will have the skating skills to go into any ice sport of their choice; hockey, figure skating, ringette, or speed skating.
Proper equipment is essential to success! Please ensure that your skater is dressed properly for skating. Avoid clothing that has anything dangling that could get caught on other skaters, stuck under skates or fall off. Full hockey gear is not recommend, it restricts movement that kids need to learn the basics of skating but elbow pads and shin pads are fine! All skaters must wear a CSA approved helmet. Having properly fitting skates are the most important piece of equipment, they should be snug but not too tight and blades should be sharpened once a month or 2 months if they aren't used often. Watch this handy video below for more on proper equipment...
